Hey,
Glad to meet you. Let me tell you about
Pi Kapps at USA!

The guys love a good time.  But they work hard too.  Let me show you around the chapter.  Let me tell you about some of the memorable things the brothers do during the year.  Let's start in January.

The year starts off with leadership development.  To get back into the swing of things in the new year, even before school starts, the alumni advisors host an Officer Transition Retreat to educate and train the newly elected officers.

This is a great opportunity to set clear direction for the chapter, to look at our strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats.  Planning the calendar for the Spring semester and setting goals are some of the important outcomes for this 8-hour work day.

The chapter hits the ground running as soon as classes start.  Informal rush is in full force and so is USA Basketball. Pi Kapps Bleed It Red!

USA Basketball is a lot of fun for the entire student body during the early part of the Spring semester.  And Pi Kapps have a long tradition of supporting the Jags!  In February it's time for USA's Homecoming Celebration. Homecoming festivities include Homecoming King and Queen, window painting, yard decorations, and culminates with the Jag's basketball game.

Homecoming is a great time for Pi Kapps to gather together and the chapter has a big alumni party every Homecoming day. This year brother Matt Corker was nominated for Homecoming King. And brother Bao Pham painted the window design and they won third place. Here's a picture of  brother Hunter Malec who escorted Homecoming Queen candidate Ms. Kelly Keith. They are standing with USA President Moulton and Homecoming Queen Holly Peek.

You never know what craziness will ensue when you hang out with Pi Kapps!  March brings time for studies and community service projects.  Intramural sports continues and Pi Kapps enjoy playing in all the sports leagues.  They are especially good at water polo and softball.

Now, let's move on to something that is near and dear to a Pi Kapp's heart...  serving others.  Spring is a great time for some service projects and fundraisers.

Push America is the Pi Kappa Phi philanthropy and they enjoy spending time in the community helping people with disabilities. Whether advocating on their behalf, raising funds, building playgrounds for children or constructing a wheelchair ramp, Pi Kapps are becoming leaders of tomorrow by serving people with disabilities today.

Through the years, the guys here at USA have held fundraisers such as the Miss USA Pageant, raffles, car washes, and road blocks.  They have built playgrounds for handicapped children, worked at the fish hatcheries, helped with Eagle Scout projects and the list goes on and on.  Serving others is an important part of life and Pi Kapps have learned to give back.

USA's Greek Awards Banquet is held every April.  Pi Kapps have been award many honors through the years.  In 2007 the chapter was awarded Softball and Water Polo awards, as well as, an Order of Omega induction of brother Lam Pham and 2007 New Member of the Year to brother Andrew Schneider.

As the semester begins to wind down, April brings the Spring Formal.  Pi Kapps host their annual Rose Ball. This is a time for the chapter to recognize our actives and alumni by handing out yearly awards.  Some of them include Athlete of the Year, Community Service Award, Scholar of the Year, Brother of the Year and Alumni of the Year. They also announce the new Rose Queen.

Pi Kapps aren't afraid of a little mud.  USA has a proud (and dirty) tradition: OOoozeball!!  This annual tournament is sponsored by the USA Southerners. Oozeball is volleyball in a pit of mud. Here you can see brothers enjoy the mud and brother Brandon Petty jumps right in!

2008 marked the 20th anniversary of Oozeball at South Alabama, which explains one of its catchy themes: "Mudslinging for 20 years." The 20-year tradition had some big changes: a new location, five new courts and 56 teams.  It was a lot of fun!

Summer is a time to relax and enjoy a brief break.  Of course, for the brothers who stay in Mobile there is plenty to do.  The guys had a Crawfish Boil that was a big success.  Not only was the event a fun social event, the proceeds from the event went to Push America.

The chapter organized their first disc golf tournament in July 2008 and was not only a fun time spent outdoors, but it also helped us raise $900 for Push America.  Pi Kapps teamed up with the Mobile Area Disc Golf Association to host this event.  A big thanks goes out to all their sponsors.

Fall semester begins with a focus on leadership.  In August the chapter holds an all-chapter leadership retreat.  This helps everyone get back on the same page after a long summer break.  The chapter invites special guest speakers to share insights and ideas to help make the guys better leaders. Pictured here is the chapter with Joey Jones, USA's new head football coach, who spoke to the chapter about recruitment. Also pictured is Pi Kappa Phi regional governor, Stephen Smith, who challenged the guys on the 7 Objectives of Chapter Excellence.

One thing that separates Pi Kappa Phi from every other fraternity on campus is the exclusive sponsorship of the Miss University of South Alabama Pageant.  The fraternity started the pageant back in 1984 and have taken pride in organizing one of the best preliminary pageants in the state of Alabama.

The guys get to dress up, escort the beautiful ladies and even do a little singing to their reigning queen, their "Rose of Pi Kappa Phi".

Autumn is the time for football.  Pi Kappa Phi is looking forward to the new football programs at USA!  The guys invited head football coach Joey Jones to their fall leadership retreat.  It was great to meet Coach Jones!  Brothers enjoy AL and AU football and even though they may not agree on who has the best team, they can get along.

Friendship is a key element of being in a fraternity.  Does everyone always get along?  Probably not, but just like a family these guys are brothers and work it out. And being in a fraternity offers you one of the best experiences of your life as you make life-long friends.  Joining Pi Kappa Phi gives you the opportunity to share some intense memories that bond you together forever. It is an experience like no other on campus, they can guarantee that!  You will meet the most amazing people, be challenged to do more than you ever thought possible, be connected with men all across the United States, and forever be a part of a legacy of CLASS.

Diversity adds spice to life and we all typically hang out with people like ourselves.  The great thing about joining Pi Kappa Phi at the University of South Alabama is that you will be exposed to a wide variety of guys.  These guys are not your typical cookie-cutter fraternity guys.  Gamma Phi embraces guys from all walks of life and your personal convictions will not be scoffed. Pi Kapps have ideals that will not be compromised and expect you to be trustworthy and responsible. Joining this fraternity you are free to be yourself, but you will be pushed to better yourself at all levels.  Hunter Malec, Pat OBrien and Issac BurgeThere is something amazing that happens when a diverse group of guys set on a course to do something amazing.

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful and committed people can change the world.

I hope you will take the time to consider making fraternity a part of your college experience and the rest of your life. Pi Kappa Phi is a brotherhood and a special bond that goes beyond your years at USA.
